Behind the Art: Waco Hippodrome Theatre & Twisted Sisters Shoetique
Join us as we meet the artists and businesses behind the Art of Homecoming mural installation.
In case you missed it – the full list of murals and locations may be found online at baylor.edu/waco/homecomingart.The first installation within our mural series can be found at the intersection of 8th Street and Austin Avenue on the side of the Waco Hippodrome Theatre complex. This Waco icon, over 100 years old, was renovated and restored in 2012 by Baylor alums Shane and Cody Turner and serves the community as Waco's premiere event space. wacohippodrometheatre.com.
The two works on the Raleigh, one a tribute to the iconic Bruiser balloon featured in the Homecoming parade, and the other, an Andy Wharhol-inspired series of Sailor Bear portraits were both completed by local artist and middle school teacher, Julie Milstead.
Second in the series, a tribute to the Golden Wave Marching band, may be found on the exterior of Twisted Sisters Shoetique at 710 Austin Avenue. The boutique is owned by sisters Erin Kubala & Traci Plemons. Located in the heart of downtown, they offer styles from head to toe. If you love shoes, this is your store!
The piece was created by Joe Rooster. A native Wacoan, Joe has been drawing and creating since childhood. Today, he enjoys designing, creating, painting murals, listening to good music, and hanging with family and friends, in addition to working in the creative services department for Baylor Athletics.
