Cultural Wealth Wednesday: Helados La Azteca
Summertime is here, and with it comes a taste for frozen treats and sweet eats to beat the Texas heat. Luckily, Waco is home to not one but two Helados La Azteca locations to satisfy your taste for something fresh, frozen, and delicious!
A small family-owned business, Helados La Azteca's location on Franklin Ave has been a longtime staple in the Waco community since opening in 1998. Best known for authentic homemade Mexican ice cream flavors, homemade paletas, fruit cups, and corn in a cup, Eduardo Garcia decided to continue the family legacy and open up a second location at 1815 Colcord Drive in 2019.
Watching his father grow the business from a dream to where it is today, Eduardo is forever grateful for his parents' hard work and dedication. As immigrants, they lived the American dream to the fullest giving the Garcia family everything they needed to thrive as Wacoans.
Helados La Azteca strives to make every customer feel like they are at home when stopping in for a savory Mexican snack. Through selling authentic Mexican ice cream flavors and paletas not typically found in our community, Eduardo and his team is bringing happiness to Waco with a simple yet oh so delicious scoop of ice cream.
As a young entrepreneur, Eduardo loves how Waco is full of opportunities. During his high school days, he often heard his classmates state how they couldn't wait to leave Waco, a desire he could never relate to. He shares how Waco is the perfect size for Helados La Azteca, allowing him to remember many of the customers that visit the shop making him closer to the community he serves.
Never one to slow down, Eduardo is looking to expand Helados La Azteca in the next year and would like to hear where the next location should be in Waco or in the surrounding community. Until then, you can visit Helados La Azteca at either 3302 Franklin or 1500 Colcord Ave. A Go Gold business partner, be sure to ask what discounts have they made available to the Baylor family.
Waco is sweeter because of Helados La Azteca. Visit their website www.heladoslaazteca.com or Instagram @heladoslaaztecawaco for more information on the progress they are making to promote cultural wealth and increase the diversity of Waco food options.
