Introducing a New Event Series: Envisioning Equity
Cultural Wealth Solid Gold Neighbor

"Not everything that is faced can be changed. But nothing can be changed until it is faced," wrote the late American author James Baldwin. With this premise, our office is excited to embark on a new initiative to raise awareness of injustices within our community. Equity refers to each of us getting what we need to survive or succeed—access to opportunity, networks, resources and supports based on where we are and where we want to go. Envisioning Equity is a new discussion series intended to provide space for Wacoans to come together and learn of opportunities to address inequities in the areas of Health, Education, Economic Opportunity, and Criminal Justice. Panelists will consist of academics, practitioners, and affected community members to discuss a specific sector's status during these quarterly periods, including local data and potential Waco-based strategies for improving Equity.Last month we hosted the first Envisioning Equity event examining the opportunities to increase Access to Healthcare for all Wacoans. During this time, a panel of community experts, including Dr. Illiana Neuman, Paula Solano, Mariela Guitterez, and Louis Garcia, shared their experience with Healthcare Access in Waco. Led by moderators, Tiffiney Grey and Nataly Mora, panelists talked on a wide range of topics, including barriers to accessing healthcare, the importance of a diverse healthcare workforce, the impact of telehealth, and community health workers' role in improving access to healthcare. Throughout our time together, we received a firsthand account of solutions that we, as a community, can implement today to improve access to healthcare within Waco.
We envision Equity not only in healthcare but in criminal justice, education, and economic opportunity as well as all other sectors. To support this vision, we are excited to announce Envisioning Equity: Education taking place on November 12th and then again on November 19th in Spanish. During this time, panelists will discuss the impact that teacher diversity has on Student Success. We hope you will join us in this conversation that affects our entire community.
