Make it in Waco: Economic Development Solid Gold Neighbor
Krista Brinser, Assistant Director, Community Relations, City Growth
Home to gifted artists and artisans, if you visit Waco’s small shops and boutiques, you can find locally made goods and artwork to suit any taste. Tourists and locals alike purchase wearables, crafts, fine art and more throughout our city’s many shopping districts and seasonal markets. While restrictions on the economy continue to ease in the wake of the shelter in place orders that shuttered businesses March through April, Waco’s community of makers moved online to sell their goods and creative services. Spearheaded by Creative Waco, in collaboration with over 15 community partners, Make it in Waco represents the community at its best and provides a one-stop shop for all of your favorite local gifts and gear. If you don’t see what you had in mind, don’t worry, the website even handles commissions!
The platform is open to any artist, performer, creative professional, small business or arts non-profit located in Waco or McLennan County; businesses may register online for the platform at no cost. After registering, vendors can sell any original creative product or service.
15% of all purchases made through the website go towards the “Make it through Corona” fund. This fund provides grants to the local arts community to help them continue to hone their craft during the pandemic. These mini grants of up to $500 can be used to develop new skills, create new artwork, or develop art-based ideas for the benefit of Waco during or after COVID-19.
The mission behind the effort is simple: in partnership, these community members aim to do the best to find creative solutions to support the needs of our creative community during this unprecedented time.
Donations directly to the "Make it Through Corona" fund can be made through Creative Waco.
