World Hunger Relief: Health Solid Gold Neighbor
Holly Webb, Office & Projects Manager
Working a farm in the modern era presents difficulties, profit margins are thin and work is strenuous. Doing so in a way that regenerates the soil is even more complex. World Hunger Relief Inc. is committed to doing just that, promoting good stewardship of the land while sharing fruits of that labor with the hungry and malnourished. Chartered in 1976 by real estate developers with the heart of God's people and the land, World Hunger Relief Inc. is a Christian nonprofit committed to the alleviation of food insecurity & malnutrition through regenerative agriculture & community development.Through farm field trips, WHRI provides visitors with the opportunity to pet pigs, milk goats, pull eggs from nesting boxes, and harvest fresh produce, often for the first time! WHRI staff members and interns facilitate these hands-on experiences, oftentimes taking this real-world knowledge with them when they leave, applying these skills internationally.
WHRI offers more than just farm day experiences. Through innovative community partnerships, WHRI offers fresh produce prescription boxes, aimed at alleviating hunger and promoting healthy living throughout the Waco community. Doctors at four Family Heath Center locations are able to write a prescription for locally-grown vegetables that are supplied through the local produce grown at the WHRI farm. Seasonal veggies and recipes written in Spanish and English are then delivered to the patient to nourish and equip them by creating knowledge around healthy-seasonal cooking!
During growing seasons, the WHRI Farm delivers 130-145 half bushels of organically grown produce to patients at the Family Health Center. This pilot program has flourished and participants have been seen purchasing more healthy produce at the local Downtown Farmers Market. You can subscribe for a CSA vegetable subscription on their website at www.worldhungerrelief.org or take a trip to the farm to purchase on site.
